In this photo issue of Dispatches, I invite you into stories of heartbreak but also of humanity, individuals helping people facing some of the world’s most challenging crises.

Christopher Lockyear, MSF secretary general, holds up an image of the destroyed MSF shelter in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, Gaza. An MSF staff member’s wife and daughter-in-law were killed and six other people were injured when an Israeli tank fired on a clearly marked MSF staff shelter on Feb. 20, 2024. Lockyear called on the UN Security Council to demand an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza. Addressing the Council at its monthly meeting on Gaza, Lockyear also called for the unequivocal protection of medical facilities, staff and patients. A YEAR IN PICTURES

This collection of photos, taken between December 2023 and December 2024, features the highs and lows we – and the people we assist – experience as we provide medical and humanitarian assistance in over 70 countries around the world. They show breaking points but also resilience and joy. These photos show how bearing witness can create a point of connection.

Medical care provides relief in the most diffcult of circumstances and we remain inspired by our staff’s commitment to deliver this care to people, even as the obstacles to doing so increase around us.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Julienne, a resident of the Kingabwa district in the commune of Limete, stands in front of her door, waiting for her children who have gone to school by canoe. Julienne’s community has experienced flooding for years now, but this time she did not have anywhere else to go, so she stayed in her flooded home. MSF logistical and medical teams work with the Ministry of Health to offer assistance to 400 households affected, including installing latrines and showers, providing tents and drinking water and conducting mobile medical clinics.
