Luis Ochoa grew up in a privileged family in Mexico, where he witnessed the social disparities affecting Indigenous people in particular.

His sister, a doctor who worked in the public health sector, inspired Luis to learn more about the inequities people face in accessing healthcare.

I met Luis in Montreal and he spoke about why he has been supporting Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for over 10 years.

“Whenever humanitarian crises happen around the world, MSF is there to provide vital medical assistance to people who find themselves in vulnerable situations,” says Luis.

“MSF is present during emergencies, conflicts and disasters, even when conditions are not stable. My support for MSF is my contribution to helping people caught in crises and supporting medical expertise.”

Luis is one of the more than 3,000 supporters who have named MSF as a beneficiary in their will – a symbolic gesture that underlines his commitment to international humanitarian work.

“I consider myself an ordinary but privileged person. I don’t have children, so I have the resources to give back to the causes I support.

“I’m not a doctor or a nurse. I can’t work in areas affected by conflict or disaster. But I can support MSF financially. I understand the context in which I live and I can see needs are growing everywhere.”

“I consider myself an ordinary but privileged person… I have the resources to give back to the causes I support.”

For Luis, giving through his legacy means contributing to positive change and preparing for a better future, which he fears will see more humanitarian crises affecting a greater number of people.

“You can’t stop giving, you have to keep wanting to change things and not remain passive,” he says.
